I have wanted to paint this scene for a long time, at one point just painting the storm effect on top of the rim, but then I wanted to go low into Canyon de Chelly and describe a hike I had taken down to the White Ruins on the canyon floor. I didn't want to make them the subject of the painting so the ruins are handled in an abreviated few strokes.
